Scenic Byways

Take a drive on Jean Lafitte's Scenic Byway as it winds its way through the heart of central Acadiana and ends near the southern part of the parish. As you take a relaxing drive the byway, you'll see farms, marshes as well as other native birds, alligators, deer and nutria. See first hand how things are grown and produced and experience nature at its finest. Begin your drive at the northern end of the parish in the Village of Maurice, home to Vivian Alexander Gallery & Museum and the World Famous City Bar. Also known as the Hug-the-Coast Highway, the southern part of the Jean Lafitte Scenic Byway will take you through Abbeville and down Hwy. 82 to Pecan Island. This scenic roadway eventually travels through some of the most extensive marshlands in North America. If you prefer to stay along Hwy. 14, you can travel eastward from Abbeville and visit the towns of Erath and Delcambre, home of the Acadian Museum and Shrimp Festival each August. Take Hwy. 14 west to Kaplan, a French-Acadian rice-farming community home of the country superstar Sammy Kershaw, then to Gueydan, home of the annual Duck Festival.
